The Aligned Affidavit

The form asks what your life costs. Most people stall there.

A Connecticut financial affidavit asks you to account for your income, your expenses, everything you own and everything you owe โ€” line by line, under oath. This workbook turns that into filling in boxes in the right order, instead of staring at a blank form wondering where to start.

01 Why this exists

The affidavit is not difficult arithmetic. It is difficult because the categories are unfamiliar, the numbers live in eleven different places, and nobody sits down and shows you how the pieces fit together. So it gets started, abandoned, and restarted โ€” often three or four times, usually at the last minute.

Meanwhile the clock is running on someone who bills by the hour. An attorney can absolutely help you assemble this. They will do it at attorney rates, using information you could have gathered yourself for nothing.

This workbook does the organizing part. It will not fill in your numbers and it will not tell you what to settle for. What it does is make sure that when you sit down with your attorney, the arithmetic is already done and the gaps are already visible.

If you have not yet read what the form actually asks for, start with the affidavit explained โ€” that is free.

02 What is inside

01

Welcome & Instructions

Where to start, what to gather first, and the order to work in. Read once, then ignore it.

02

Income

Weekly, biweekly, monthly and annual figures converted for you โ€” so the number you report is on the basis the form actually asks for. This is where people stumble first.

03

Business Income

A separate section for self-employment, ownership interests and distributions, where reported income and actual income are frequently not the same figure.

04

Expenses

Every category pre-built, so what your household actually costs is assembled from records rather than guessed at under pressure.

05

Assets & Liabilities

Two inventories โ€” accounts, property, retirement, policies; then loans, cards and balances โ€” with running totals.

06

Summary

Everything pulled together on one page, calculated automatically. This is the page you bring to the meeting.

07

Document Checklist

The statements, returns and records to collect โ€” with a place to mark what you have and what is still missing.

05 Questions

Do I need Excel? No. It opens in Google Sheets, which is free.

Will this file my affidavit for me? No. It organizes your figures so that completing the official form is straightforward and accurate. The form itself still gets completed and filed by you or your attorney.

I am not in Connecticut. Is it useless? Not useless, but be honest with yourself about it โ€” the categories follow Connecticut. Most states ask for the same underlying information in a different order.

My spouse handles all the money and I do not know where to start. That is the common case, not the exception. Start with the Document Checklist and work backwards from what you can actually access.

What if it is not right for me? Email within 30 days and you get your money back.

Doing the arithmetic yourself costs you an evening. Having it done for you costs considerably more.
